Did you know there are quite a few rare Switch games? You might have a few in your collection.
There are plenty of rare games on Nintendo Switch thanks to the existence of boutique publishers. These publishers like Super Rare Games and Limited Run agree to publish a small batch number of physical copies for popular games. Physical game collectors who want to own carts of the games they buy value these collectibles – since it’s often the only way to get a physical copy of a digital game.
Digital games like Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, and Salt & Sanctuary have all had their chance at being published. But there are quite a few indie games that saw limited prints of their games. (Think fewer than 1,000 copies in the original print.) These games are ultra rare, even if they’re not the best games to play on Switch.
10. River City Girls – $170
River City Girls is a classic beat ’em up that saw its physical release with Limited Run Games. Only 2,500 copies of this limited edition print were ever made. It includes game posters, artwork, cards, and a physical copy of the game that retailed for $75 when new. You can find copies of the game going for around $170 on eBay.
9. Shelter Generations – $200
Shelter Generations is the third game in Super Rare Games physical line-up. It only received a 3,000-copy run and remains one of the more rare games to find in physical form. You can snag a copy on eBay for around $200 with cards included.
8. Evoland Legendary Edition – $245
Evoland Legendary Edition is another Super Rare Games release that has gone up in price in the secondary market. The game itself is a popular mix of several different genres as an homage to growing up with gaming as a hobby. You can find gently used copies of this print run for around $250.
7. Fox N Forests – $250
Fox N Forests is a crowd funded game from German studio Bonus Level Entertainment. The game released on console in 2018 and got a limited edition physical print with Strictly Limited Games. Only 1,000 copies of the collector’s edition you see above were printed, making it one of the more rare Switch games.
6. Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime – $300
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime got the physical treatment early in the Switch’s life cycle. Only 3,000 copies of the game were printed, which is on the low end for a Super Rare Games release. The game itself is a neat little co-op party game for up to four people to enjoy together.
You can find well-kept copies of the game for sale on eBay for upwards of $300. They include all the stickers and cards that Super Rare Games releases with their physical versions.
5. Celeste Collector’s Edition – $300
The Celeste physical print got the standard edition and the collector’s edition treatment. Only 2,500 copies of the Celeste collector’s edition are available, making this a rare addition to any indie game lover’s physical collection. The game was produced in partnership with Fangamer and included a small flying strawberry plushie modeled after the hard-to-collect collectibles in each level.
4. Outlast Murkoff Briefcase Edition – $375
Outlast is a unique survival horror series that finally made its way to Switch with a Bundle of Terror version. But the only way to get a physical copy of the horror game was to have picked up Limited Run’s Murkoff Briefcase Edition when it was printed. Only 2,000 of these were made, so this is another rare Switch game.
The game on the cart is the same as the Bundle of Terror edition in the Switch eShop. This is one of the more slick editions that Limited Run has released on Nintendo Switch, too.
3. Bayonetta Non-Stop Climax Edition – $390
Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 debuted on the Nintendo Switch in 2018. To celebrate, a special edition was released in Japan called the Bayonetta Non-Stop Climax Edition. It contains everything you see above, including a full tarot card deck for fans to enjoy.
This special edition was never released in North America, so that alone makes it one of the more rare Switch games. You can pick it up on eBay for around $390 if you’re okay with a slightly used version. New, shrink-wrapped versions of the game can sell as high as $800 on the online auction site.
2. Beamdog Ultimate Collector’s Edition – $399
Game publisher Beamdog partnered with Sky Bound to create this ultra limited edition physical version of several classic games. The pack includes Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2, Neverwinter Nights, Planescape Torment, and Icewind Dale. There’s also an exclusive steelbook, a pin, some dice, and other baubles to round out a rather unique collector’s edition for fans of old-school CRPGs.
All of these games in the collection are worth owning, though the Switch ports may struggle more than other consoles. The handheld appeal of the Switch may be dulled by the upcoming Steam Deck – leaving this kind of thing to physical collector’s only.
1. Skylanders Imaginators – $430 – Rare Switch Game
The Skylanders series was on a downward trend in a big way by the time the Nintendo Switch was released in 2017. Activision gave the series one last release with Skylanders Imaginators, a pared down version of the popular toys-to-life concept that endured during the Wii U generation.
Not too many of these starter packs were made for the holiday season, since most kids were sick to death of Skylanders at the time. The result is an ultra-rare game, especially if you can find the game with the three toys included. New listings for this on eBay start at around $350 and they’re as high as $430 on Amazon.
