You can now customize the profile icons on Nintendo Switch. But you’ll need to spend Platinum points to do it. Here’s how it works.
As a perk of being a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber, Nintendo has added some new digital rewards in the form of avatars. Users can do daily and weekly quests to earn Platinum Points to spend on these digital avatar items. Icons, frames, and backgrounds can be customized to create a unique look for your Switch profile icon.
Requirements
- You need to be a member of Nintendo Switch Online.
- You need to have Platinum Points available to spend.
Players can earn Platinum Points by doing the daily and weekly quests Nintendo offers in the Switch Online app on the Switch itself. Here’s how to access those quests so you can see what will earn you Platinum Points this week.
- Click the ‘Nintendo Switch Online‘ button on the bottom row.
- Scroll down to highlight ‘Missions & Rewards‘ and press ‘A.’
- Press ‘L‘ and ‘R‘ Buttons to scroll through available games.
- Buy the icon, frame, or background you want to add to your collection.
Nintendo rotates the games that it features in the program on a monthly basis. The first month these icons were available was March 1, 2022. Nintendo featured extra icons from Super Mario Odyssey and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

How to Create Custom Switch Profile Icons
Once you’re ready to create a new custom Switch profile icon, tap the ‘Create Icon‘ button at the top right. You’ll be presented with a screen showing your current icon collection. You can make an icon from any combination of items you own from the same game. However, you cannot mix and match.
Custom Switch Icons – What to Know
Nintendo rotates the available games featured monthly, so if there are no icons you want this month, keep checking. So far, Nintendo has added new icon elements each Thursday, so it becomes something to check just like the eShop. For the month of April 2022, Nintendo added icon elements from Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

You can see some of the custom icon elements you can create below. While these icons are only available to purchase for a limited time, once you buy them you have them forever. It’s recommended to buy any icon you might be interested to have in the future while it is available. It’s unclear how often Nintendo will offer repeats on some of these icons.
