games like fallout on switch

Check out this list of games like Fallout on Nintendo Switch. From isometric strategy to first-person shooter perspectives.

Younger gamers are more familiar with the Fallout series as an open world RPG blended with a first-person perspective. The original Fallout games were isometric complex RPGs with multiple branching paths, lots of weird characters, and plenty of narrative fun to be had. Take a look at this list of games like Fallout on Nintendo Switch, based on the style of Fallout games that you like.

Games Like Fallout 1 & 2 on Nintendo Switch

There are plenty of isometric CRPGs on Nintendo Switch to whet your itch for a Fallout game. Some of them are Fallout-inspired, while others take place in an alternate world but feature the same style of gameplay.

Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut

The Wasteland series actually predates Fallout, but this revival of the series draws plenty of inspiration from the early games. If you love exploring a forgotten wasteland as the only arbiter of justice, Wasteland 2 on Switch has that in spades. The game’s fonts are kind of small in handheld mode, but it runs well.

Anyone looking for a Fallout 1 & 2 style experience on Switch should start here. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the third game Wasteland 3 will ever make it to Switch. The game is more graphically intensive than the Switch hardware can handle.

ATOM RPG

The developers of ATOM RPG were clearly inspired by the early Fallout games. The game is set in an alternate world in which the United States attacked Russia with a nuclear bomb in 1986, leaving much of the world devastated. You’ll range across the Siberian tundra as a stalker, exploring what’s left of the Soviet wastes.

This game is pretty rough around the edges in terms of translations. The developers are from Eastern Europe, so the text is very rough in places. There are also some environment areas written in cyrillic script that may make quests hazy for English speakers with no background in Russian. There are plenty of guides to help you if you get stuck online.

Beautiful Desolation

Beautiful Desolation is an adventure game that takes a lot of cues from the early Fallout games in terms of narrative and exploration. The setting is as if someone mashed the gameplay mechanics of Fallout with the weirdness of Planescape: Torment to tell a new story set in a futuristic apocalyptic world.

Every decision you make has an impact on the world and the future conversations that are available to you. Very few games take so many different paths into account, which makes Beautiful Desolation worth experiencing. It’s a little rough around the edges, but tells a great story.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the most modern feeling game on this list, but it isn’t really set in a traditional apocalypse. Instead, players are forced onto an island where magic-bearers are enslaved to atone for their destruction of the world. There are several unique companions, all with their own backstories and voice acting.

Games Like Fallout 3 & Beyond on Nintendo Switch

When Fallout 3 came out, Bethesda transformed the game into a first-person RPG experience. If you’re looking for a suite of games that feels more like the Fallout 3 series to play, check out these recommendations on Nintendo Switch.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is a game from Obsidian Entertainment, who developed Fallout: New Vegas for Bethesda. If you like the humor of that series, you’ll probably find a lot to like about The Outer Worlds. There are similar gameplay experiences down to a slow-mo replica of V.A.T.S. to make aiming easier for those who need it.

It’s worth noting that The Outer Worlds doesn’t really capture that big open world feel you might be going for, either. You spend most of the game planet-hopping and solving one crisis after another. But it’s just a clever vehicle to hide corridor environments with pretty aesthetics.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls series offers similar gameplay to Fallout and Skyrim is available on Nintendo Switch. You’ll have to deal with a vanilla version without mods, but it’s one of the best open world experiences available on Switch. The Switch version runs quite well too, which should be expected for a decade-old game.

Metro 2033 Redux

The Metro 2033 series is based on the popular novel series by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. It’s a linear, first-person shooter that tells the story of how Artyom survived an encounter with mutants on the surface. The world feels rich and alive as you navigate the tunnels below Moscow and beyond.

Metro: Last Light

Metro: Last Light continues the story of Artyom from Metro 2033. If you plan on playing this series, you should start there since events from the first game are regularly referenced in the second. There is a third game in the series available on Xbox and PlayStation called Metro: Exodus. The Switch is unlikely to see the conclusion of the series.
