Want to play a game that feels like navigating a Game of Thrones-like situation? Check out these games featuring political struggles on Nintendo Switch.

There are plenty of games on Nintendo Switch that feature conflict and strife for you to manage. Some of them come in the form of tactics games, while others feel more like simulations where you try to make the best of a bad situation. We’ve compiled a list of games that feature plenty of political strife between factions, offering unique gameplay choices because of the many branching possibilities.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a story of students a monastery who are training to become the next military leaders of their region. But after a Civil War breaks out, the students are pulled in a dramatically different course. Each play through players can side with a different faction, giving a unique perspective on the war through a different ally’s experience. The game is also exclusive to the Nintendo Switch platform, making it one of the best political struggles you can play on the platform.

A spin-off in the Dynasty Warriors format called Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes expands the conflict even further. It strays from the tactical-based gameplay into more action combat, however. Again, players side with one of the main factions to experience how the story plays out–giving three paths to see everything.

Triangle Strategy

Triangle Strategy offers a sprawling world where a huge cast of supporting characters can live or die by the choices you make. It’s a tactical strategy game that feels like slipping into a throne-ravaged Westeros clone. There’s plenty to love here if you’re a fan of tactical strategy games as the choices you make do affect how the story progresses.

There’s even a free demo available for Triangle Strategy that shows you the prologue and allows you to experience the combat and decision-making, firsthand. Check it out to see if this game is your type of political struggle. For fans who want a decidedly more fictional take on their political strife narratives.

Disco Elysium

Prefer your gameplay to feature more murder mystery solving with political intrigue on the side? You should check out Disco Elysium on Nintendo Switch. This is easily one of the best narrative games you can play, with branching choices that impact how the story progresses. The unique system for determining how successful your actions are also influence the type of cop you become.

Tactics Ogre Reborn

Tactics Ogre Reborn is a wonderful remake of an older game that holds up well for tactics fans to this day. Players assume the role of a trio of characters whose home village is razed in the course of a war that is ravaging the land. These three characters get caught up in a war that spans the continent.

Valkyria Chronicles 1-4

Valkyria Chronicles 1-4 follows a different series of students throughout each game. The series is set in a fantasy world with WW2-era technology and a huge multi-national war going on. The game features both real-time and turn-based combat. Players move on individual characters’ turns, but the combat is real-time.

You’ll need to be quick with snipers, rocket launchers, and even tanks to make the most of the situations you’ll encounter in this quartet of games. In my personal opinion, Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 4 are the best of the series. However, they’re all worth playing if you enjoy tactical games about political struggle.

Road 96

Embark on a road trip where several teens are seeking to escape a regime that would throw them in work camps. It’s a choose your own adventure style game where the choices you make can impact what happens to the group of teens you’re managing. The ever-present political backgrounds of the characters you meet in Road 96 feels astonishingly real to any LGBTQ+ people who have lived in or visited America.

We. The Revolution

Your role as a magistrate court judge during the French Revolution plays out in more ways than just the decisions you make in the court room. The trials you hear and the decisions you make could help or hinder struggling factions that are vying to remake France into a democratic republic. We. the Revolution highlights how important decision-making can be for a fledgling country from the top down.

Help Will Come Tomorrow

Want something that feels a little bit more personal? Help Will Come Tomorrow explores the survivors of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia–with nine unique characters from three different stratas of society. Each character interacts with another in unique ways and brings unique problems to the group’s continued survival. Try to keep your party members from going at each other’s throats as you wait for help to arrive in the frosty Siberian tundra.

Warsaw

In Warsaw, you manage a band of resistance fighters in 1944 Poland who are seeking to take back their city from the Nazi occupying forces. The gameplay itself draws inspiration from games like Darkest Dungeon, where you send a group of fighters out into the world and manage their afflictions as they come back. It highlights the realities of real war and political struggle and pairs well with This War of Mine for showing the casualties of war.

Chained Echoes

Chained Echoes is a traditional turn-based JRPG with a unique setting. Players travel around the continent of Valandis seeking to end the war between three factions that grips the nation. Between the gorgeous pixel art and the complex progression system–there’s a lot to love. The narrative is fast-paced and well-written too, which is a rarity for some JRPG games.
