ACNH flower breeding

These images from the delayed ACNH guide reveal hybrid flower patterns.

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Companion Guide was supposed to release on April 17. However, due to the global pandemic, the release of the guide was delayed. Now fans in North America can expect to get their hands on it starting May 1.

However, some European and Australian fans have already received the guide. These pictures show the flower hybrid guide, showcasing all possible combinations for flowers and their sell price.

Hey, Listen!

The information below is out-dated! Experimentation has revealed new information on optimal ACNH flower breeding.

ACNH Flower Hybrids

Players can get rare flower colors in their village by planting flowers in a specific pattern and watering them. These flowers then have a chance to spawn unique colors. There are eight different types of flowers in ACNH, each with their own color possibilities.

  • Tulips
  • Roses
  • Pansies
  • Cosmos
  • Lilies
  • Hyacinths
  • Windflowers
  • Mums

Planting flowers of the same species in a checkerboard pattern and watering them will result in new flowers. These new flowers may be a rare color hybrid not available except through flower breeding. You can find new flowers for your island by doing Nook Miles Islands.

You must water the flowers each day to get a new flower to grow. The new flower may or may not be one of the special hybrid colors. The charts from the ACNH: Companion Guide show all flower color possibilities. That means you’ll need extra patience to grow those rare rose colors.

Note: Golden Roses can only be obtained from watering two black roses with a Gold Watering Can.

ACNH Flower Guide

See the images below to see which color combinations are possible for each flower. Roses are the best flowers to breed for hybrids because blue and gold roses sell for 1,000 bells apiece. Rare hybrid colors of other breeds only sell for a maximum of 240 bells.

You’ll also need some rare hybrid flowers to make some of the DIY recipes available in ACNH.

Think that explains everything about ACNH flower hybrids?

Well, hold on there. The flowers in the ACNH universe actually use Mendelian genetics. That means each flower you see has a recessive trait in the game’s programming, that isn’t represented by color.

You can only figure out these recessive traits by breeding two flowers to determine their expression.

Other Growing Tips

Your basic starting flowers (white, yellow, red) must be grown from seeds. Because flowers have four possible genotypes, flowers not grown from seeds may possess different genes. Only start your basic colors from seeds you have planted and sell the rest to the Nook twins.

This guide does an excellent job of highlighting how to important genotype is to growing hybrid flowers.
